When most motorists say they’re going out for a spin behind the wheel they mean a nice little drive in the country.

But when daredevil Guerlain Chicherit says he’s going for a spin he means just that – a 360-degree turn in mid-air.
The rally champion has now become the first to execute a perfect ‘backflip’ in a specially built Mini. The 34-year-old managed the tricky stunt after launching it to a height of 23m (75ft) from an 8m (26ft) high ramp, before landing on the snow to the delight of crowds.

The car’s maker BMW said it was the world’s first backflip performed in a vehicle using a static ramp, which is similar to a quarter pipe on a freestyle course.

Frenchman Chicherit, 34, said: ‘Before the jump it was crazy. I had to arrive at 60kph (37mph) and be full throttle in the kicker to get the right rotation. In the jump, I knew the balance of the car was good and it took me maybe 20 seconds to realize I had landed on my wheels.

‘When you attempt something nobody has ever achieved before, the stress is really high but the only way is to just try it.’

He practiced the stunt in private on Sunday before repeating it later in front of thousands of fans in the ski resort of Tignes, France.
