Twin mothers give birth on the same day

OHIO- Cousins Aiden and Donavyn aren’t New Year’s Day babies.

They were a little early for that, but perhaps even more special.

Their mothers — identical twins — gave birth about two hours apart Monday at Summa Akron City Hospital.

Donavyn Scott Bratten and Aiden Lee Alan Dilts already have Christmas toys awaiting them at home.

Donavyn will get bragging rights as the older cousin. The son of Aimee Nelson, 19, and Matthew Bratten, 20, of Kenmore, arrived at 12:11 p.m. Monday. He weighed 7 pounds, 2½ ounces and measured 21 inches long.

Aiden will get bragging rights as the larger cousin. Arriving at 2:03 p.m., the son of Ashlee Nelson, 19, and Cody Dilts, 22, of Wadsworth, weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces and measured 22½ inches long.

Dr. Laura Schnegg did the honors of delivery.

The newborns’ grandmother, Marcella Farson, said the babies made Christmas special.

“Even the babies had things under the trees,” she said. “They got little outfits, snowsuits, rattles, little toys, and they got their first Hot Wheels cars. They weren’t even here yet and they got their first gifts from Santa.”

Farson said the mothers didn’t plan same-day births and were not raised to do things alike. The due dates were about a week apart.

Asked if she ever dressed them alike as girls, Farson said: “Only when they were little. When they got to their individuality stage, I allowed them to do what they wanted — and they did for the most part. But the funny part is that nine times out of 10, one would come home with one thing purple and the other one would do the same thing but pink.”

That carried over to the pregnancy.

“Within the past two months, me being the mother, I would get a whiny phone call in the middle of the night on what’s going on and I would hang the phone up and literally five minutes later I would have the other one crying.”

Then came Monday.

Aimee Nelson called at 4 a.m. to say she was headed to the hospital. Her sister’s call came about two hours later.

Cody Dilts, a roofer and new dad, said he is taking it all in stride.

“I was ready,” he said.
